I am so excited to share all of our photos from our overnight trip to Milford Sound, New Zealand! There are a LOT of photos, so tuck in for this one. It is just such perfect timing that I purchased my wedding dress yesterday, and today I am sharing the last photos from our amazing trip, and that these happen to contain our engagement! So let’s get to it!
Milford Sound is actually not a “Sound”, it’s a Fiord, and it is located in New Zealand’s Fiordland National Park on the country’s south island. It is a geographical term for a body of water that come in from the ocean with steep mountains on each side, usually formed by glaciers. To get there, we traveled on a large bus and made several stops to take in the landscape. Fiordland National Park is actually recognized as the place left on earth which most resembles the ancient continent Gondwana (when the earth’s land masses were one big continent) both in geography and foliage.
We finally arrived at Milford Sound and boarded our boat for the night- a beautiful old steamship! We had our own cozy room lined with beautiful wood and an adorable port window.
After boarding the boat, the ship pushed off and we took some smaller boats across the Fiord to a trail for a short hike. The trail was lined with endless ferns and other beautiful, green plants. These small buds would soon bloom into some of New Zealand’s famous ferns!
After our hike, we all headed back out into the Fiord and to our waiting ship. The sun gleamed off tall cliffs on all sides- it was easy to see why Milford Sound is sometimes called the 8th Wonder of the World, and was recently rated as the World’s Most Beautiful Place!
Once we were back on the ship, it cruised around the sound for a bit while dinner was prepared. Josh and I couldn’t stay off the deck- we were not going to miss views like this for one second!
We enjoyed a delicious dinner on the boat, and then headed outside to watch the sunset.
It was just after sunset (when I took this picture) that Josh proposed! We were alone on the deck of the boat, and got engaged under the stars! We couldn’t have asked for a more magical place, or a more magical moment.
Milford Sound is one of the wettest places on earth, averaging 252 inches of rain each year! The low, heavy clouds grazed the clifftops in the early morning.
This trip was such an amazing adventure for us- and Milford Sound was the most astonishing and beautiful finale. Now off to plan a wedding!
