This past Saturday was Homecoming at Illinois! Josh and I both met at/graduated from the University of Illinois, and most of our friends today are people we were lucky enough to meet while we were there. And while we’ve kept in touch with friends, we haven’t been back to campus since graduation several years ago. A football game and tailgating seemed as good a reason as any to get back and see how campus has changed since we’ve been gone!
We met our friends at their tailgate where they were already playing bags and firing up the grill.
We chowed down on burgers, brats, chips and dip, veggies, and this amazing frito/taco salad….
When game time came around, we packed up the tailgate and headed over to Memorial Stadium. The stadium was packed with blue and orange! The team was wearing grey uniforms for the game to honor Red Grange, nicknamed “The Galloping Ghost”. He was a player on the team in the 1920’s, who was named by ESPN in 2008 as #1 on their Top 25 Players in College Football History list, and inspired the following poem which gave him his nickname:
“A streak of fire, a breath of flame
Eluding all who reach and clutch;
A gray ghost thrown into the game
That rival hands may never touch;
A rubber bounding, blasting soul
Whose destination is the goal — Red Grange of Illinois!”
The threat of rain sure wasn’t enough to drive the fans away!
Of course they chose to show #77 for The Galloping Ghost for this game!
As well as a popular campus bar, “Kam’s” which is popular with the greek community on campus:
And of course the traditional beer chug (which they do every game):
Unfortunately, the Illini weren’t able to squeeze out a win over their opponent Wisconsin… tears!
Hopefully we can keep coming back to campus for many years to come.
After the game, we stopped by our favorite bar on campus, Murphy’s, for some suds and memories! Can’t wait to see what we are all up to in another three years!
